Also it's physically louder to play on the thinner device, at least if you hit it hard. Thinner than the older Launchpads: this makes them more practical, but the recoil felt harder to me, which I didn't like.

No, I haven't tried the Pro Mk3 yet, but I used the Launchpad X, the two of which share the following properties:

IMO the best thing you can do: try a Launchpad X in your local store or order one and send it back if you don't like it. Device properties may vary even between different instances of the same model, so I might just have been lucky with my Launchpad Pro and unlucky with some of my other pad controllers. My personal choice is the Launchpad Pro (the old one, not the Mk3), which I've been using for years, and I've yet to see a pad controller that can beat its velocity response, feel and reliability (and I also have a Push 2, a Maschine Mikro Mk3 and used to have a Launchpad X). Some people prefer buttons to pads (e.g., MIDI Fighter users). I think this is a clear advantage even if you don't need velocity sensitivity, but it really depends on what and how you want to do. On these devices, even a very light touch will (or at least can) trigger a MIDI note. The pads of the velocity sensitive Launchpads (Pro and X) are not buttons, they don't move. The "pads" of the original Launchpad are more like push buttons, which need to move quite a bit before a note is registered.
